There wouldn’t be enough room for me to say all that I’d like to say about Sunshine Orthodontics. I will do my best with what I have! From the first moment you step into the reception area, you feel as though you are entering a spa. The elegant yet homey décor, the delicious and soothing candles, the so very friendly and accommodating staff, you’re immediately at ease and comfortable.

Sunshine Orthodontics truly feels like a family and they make you feel like a very important part of that family. Dr. Mansour is awesome! He is so knowledgeable, he takes the time to explain everything to you in a very down to earth manner, never making you feel as though any question you may have is a nuisance or down right silly. He is excellent with children, very caring and reassuring. If you have a worry wart, or very nervous child, who makes you turn around and go right back to the office because of some worry about their appliance/braces, the staff is so wonderful at immediately addressing any and all concerns they have.

For my family and eventually myself, there would never be a thought of seeing anyone else. We are Sunshine Orthodontic “lifers”.

Initial Visit

emergency1Do you charge for an initial visit?

No. As a courtesy to you and your family dentist, we will always discuss the feasibility of braces or tooth straightening without charging a fee. There may be a co-payment for X-rays and other diagnostic procedures.

At what age do you start seeing patients?

As a rule of thumb, we like to evaluate young patients after the 6-year molars erupt and the front permanent teeth just start to appear. This is usually between the ages of 6 and 8.

Why do you evaluate patients so young?

The purpose of early evaluation is to inform and observe, more than to start treatment. At this early age, the eventual needs may be identified and discussed. A small percentage of this young group may need some form of intervention. Habits are evaluated, medical issues are discussed and an observation schedule is arranged.

How long will the first visit take?

The first visit can last anywhere between 30 minutes and 1 hour depending on how ready the patient is for treatment. We may just do a visual exam and explain the situation or we may suggest one or more X-rays and complete diagnostics including casts of the teeth with photographs.

Do you take patients transferring from out of town?

Yes we do. We handle a patient transferring into our office from another city just like a new patient. We gather complete diagnostic records to show the current status and propose treatment to complete the work that has been started. Unlike most practices, we do not ask for a large down payment but merely assess a monthly fee to complete the treatment in progress.

Do you have any adult patients?

Absolutely. A growing percentage of our patients are adult. New, more cosmetic appliances are making adult treatment much more comfortable and convenient.

What is the difference between an orthodontist and a dentist?

An orthodontist is a general dentist that has had at least 2 more years of full-time training in orthodontics resulting in a nationally accepted specialty certificate. The orthodontist then limits his practice to straightening teeth and dentofacial orthopedics.

Can I make all my appointments in the afternoon after school and late in the day?

In order to have early and late appointments available for the majority of patients, some procedures need to be accomplished during the hours of 9 and 3. We will do our best to work with your schedules and accommodate your family needs.

Do you see patients for emergencies?

Yes, our contact information for an emergency is posted on the website as well as the phone answering machine.

Types of Braces

Thanks to today’s advances in orthodontic technology,  Sunshine Orthodontics in Wappingers Falls, New York can provide our patients with more options when it comes to wearing braces than ever before. While regular metal braces are still widely used, invisible and clear braces in New York are becoming increasingly popular along with removable appliances that can be used for mild cases of misaligned teeth.

Please see below to find more information for traditional, clear, or invisible braces. You can also ask us to learn more about the types of braces we offer at our office. You need to speak with your New York orthodontist to determine which appliance is right for you.

Invisible Braces in New York

Clear appliances, such as Invisalign, use a series of invisible, removable, and comfortable aligners to straighten your teeth. And, no one can tell you are wearing those aligners because they are invisible! Not only are the aligners invisible, they are removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are less of a hassle. The invisible aligners are comfortable and have no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. If you are interested in getting more information about invisible braces in New York, call our office today!

Clear Ceramic Braces in New York

Clear ceramic braces are made of clear materials and are therefore less visible on your teeth than metal braces. For this reason, clear ceramic braces are used mainly on older teenagers and adult patients who have aesthetic concerns. While clear braces are visually less prominent, they do require more attention to oral hygiene as ceramic braces are larger than metal braces. The only drawback to ceramic brackets is that they are more fragile, and the elastic ties can discolor between orthodontic visits with certain foods and smoking. If you want more information about clear braces in New York, feel free to call our office today!

Traditional Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces are the most common type of braces and are smaller and more comfortable today than ever before. Made of high-grade stainless steel, metal braces straighten your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. With metal braces, you have the option of adding colored elastics (rubber bands) for a more unique and colorful smile.

All About Braces

Brushing and Flossing

It’s more important than ever to brush and floss regularly when you have braces, so the teeth and gums are healthy during orthodontic treatment. Patients who do not keep their teeth clean may require more frequent visits to the dentist for a professional cleaning. Adults who have a history of gum disease should also see a periodontist during orthodontic treatment. Watch the two videos below on the proper care of braces during orthodontic treatment.

Eating with Braces

What can you eat? Let’s talk about what you shouldn’t eat! For the first day or so, stick to soft foods. Avoid tough meats, hard breads, and raw vegetables. Before long, you’ll be able to bite a cucumber again. But you’ll need to protect your orthodontic appliances when you eat for as long as you’re wearing braces.

Foods to Avoid

  • Chewy foods: bagels, hard rolls, licorice
  • Crunchy foods: popcorn, ice
  • Sticky foods: caramels, gum
  • Hard foods: nuts, candy
  • Foods you have to bite into: corn on the cob, apples, carrots

Chewing on hard things (for example, pens, pencils or fingernails) can damage the braces. Damaged braces will cause treatment to take longer.

In order to help our patients maintain good oral health throughout treatment many products from Philips SONICARE are offered for purchase in our offices

Adult Treatment

adulttreatmentOrthodontics is not just for children and teens. In fact, 1 in every 5 patients in orthodontic treatment is an adult. No one is too old for orthodontic treatment.

Adults seek orthodontic treatment for many of the same reasons as children. Some adults had orthodontic problems as children but were unable to correct them until now. Others, who had treatment as children, may need further treatment as adults due to relapse or limitations in initial treatment.

Benefits of Treatment
Adults can benefit from orthodontic treatment in many ways. These include:

  • Align the teeth to create a more aesthetic and beautiful smile
  • Correct relapse after previous orthodontic treatment due to lack of long term retainer wear
  • Improve the ability to brush and floss, especially for crowded or overlapping lower front teeth
  • Create a better or more comfortable bite and ability to chew
  • Address missing teeth
  • Close spaces between the teeth
  • Reduce excessive wear on the teeth due to grinding or poor bite
  • Jaw surgery to correct discrepancy between the upper and lower jaws.

Appearance of Braces
Many adults are concerned with the appearance of braces. Often, Invisalign® (The invisible alternative to braces) can be used to treat adults. This technology involves clear removable aligners, fabricated through advanced 3D imaging to align the teeth. For more severe problems, we have the option of clear ceramic brackets instead of metal.

Orthodontic treatment is no more uncomfortable for adults than children. Adults undergoing orthodontic treatment report the same level of soreness as children (although adults are more willing to tell us about the soreness).

Typically, the teeth are most uncomfortable 12-24 hours after an orthodontic adjustment and will disappear within 3 to 5 days. Modern appliances are smaller and more comfortable to wear. Modern techniques, with the new titanium technology, put less pressure on the teeth to cause discomfort, while moving the teeth more rapidly and efficiently. It also decreases the time required between adjustments to every 8 – 10 weeks. Treatment time, on average, is completed in 15-18 months.

The fee for adult orthodontic treatment is determined the same way as child or adolescent treatment. It is based on the severity of the problem, the complexity of the correction, the appliances used and the length of time to correct.

Dr. Mansour has treated individuals in their 50’s, 60’s and even their 70’s. It is never too late to gain the smile you have always wanted.

To learn more about your orthodontic treatment options, we invite you to schedule a complimentary consultation at one of our Hudson Valley offices in either Kingston, Rhinebeck or Wappingers Falls, NY.

Early Treatment

At what age should a child first visit the orthodontist?

mansour-sunshine-orthodontics-treatment2-1The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that most children should have an orthodontic screening by age 7. This allows Dr. Ahmed Mansour to determine if orthodontic treatment will be required and the best time for the patient to be treated. Many of the dentists in our community have been trained to identify orthodontic problems early, and may refer you to our office earlier than age 7.

Why are children being evaluated at such an early age?

Early diagnosis and treatment can guide erupting teeth into a more favorable position, preserve space for permanent teeth, and reduce the likelihood of fracturing protruded front teeth.

If early treatment is indicated, Dr. Mansour can guide the growth of the jaw and incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce the likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify later treatment, after all the permanent teeth erupt.

Does early treatment benefit all children?

Early treatment does not necessarily benefit all children. Certain types of orthodontic problems can be more easily and efficiently corrected in the teen years when all the permanent teeth have erupted. Some skeletal orthodontic problems should not be addressed until growth is more advanced or completed. The doctors develop a plan for treatment based on each individual child’s needs. If the doctor decides the patient is not ready for treatment, they are placed on our orthodontic supervisory program.

What is the Orthodontic Supervisory Program?
In addition to a beautiful new smile, what are some other benefits of orthodontic treatment?

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign uses a series of customized, clear aligners to straighten teeth in a quicker amount of time and with fewer office visits than traditional braces. Thousands of orthodontists in the United States and Canada use Invisalign braces to accurately and effectively treat their patients. Invisalign aligners are:

  • Completely invisible – Invisalign aligners cannot be seen while you are wearing them! Friends, family members and co-workers may never even know you are wearing braces, unless of course you tell them!
  • Comfortable to wear – The aligners are made from a special plastic that has smooth, rounded edges so they won’t irritate your mouth and tissues like traditional braces often can.
  • Customized just for you – Your Invisalign aligners are customized to fit your mouth. Dr. Mansour uses advanced 3-D computer imaging technology to replicate an exact impression of your mouth and teeth, then he customizes each aligner so that it fits your mouth, and over time moves your teeth into the proper position.
  • Removable –Unlike traditional metal braces, you can remove your aligners to eat, drink, brush your teeth, floss and for special occasions. There’s no need to change your lifestyle with Invisalign!
  • Effective – You will begin to notice a significant difference even before your treatment is complete! Most treatments are complete within one year; however this can vary from patient to patient.
